New learning application on CSDP missions

Improving the Effectiveness of Capabilities in EU Conflict Prevention (IECEU) -project launched a new learning application on European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions.

The learning environment introduces you to eight selected case studies related to European Union’s crisis management covered by the IECEU project.

After completing these lessons, you will have obtained a basic understanding of the EU processes and institutions which are involved in planning and implementing EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy  missions. Additionally, you will gain understanding of essential concepts and topics related to crisis prevention and crisis management including: comprehensive security, security sector reform (SSR), mentoring, monitoring and advising, and local ownership.

Peacekeepers saved many lives despite challenges, UN officials stress at year’s end

“Despite a particularly deadly year for United Nations peacekeepers – with more than 60 ‘blue helmets’ killed in hostile acts – the Organization in 2017 completed its peacekeeping objectives in Côte d’Ivoire, refocused its work in Haiti and will soon complete its mandate in Liberia.

“We do protect civilians every day. We do save lives every day. We often do it under very difficult and stressful circumstances,” Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix said in a recent interview with UN News.”

UN Security Council: UN peacekeeping operations will keep aiming to reduce their environmental impact

The United Nations Security Council announced that peacekeeping missions will continue to consider ways to reduce the environmental impact of their operations, in line with relevant UN resolutions and mindful of the goals set out in international accords on the environment, including the Paris Agreement on climate change.

Through an agreed press statement, the 15-member Council reaffirmed the basic principles of peacekeeping, while stressing that it remains cognizant of the possible environmental impact of the peacekeeping operations it mandates.

EU and NATO cooperation to expand to new areas, including counter-terror; military mobility; women, peace and security

The EU and NATO have agreed 34 new actions as part of the ongoing implementation of the 2016 Joint Declaration. These deepen cooperation and also expand cooperation to new issues, including by addressing military mobility, information sharing in the fight against terrorism, and promoting women’s role in peace and security.

NATO Deputy Secretary General stresses the importance of Women, Peace and Security

´NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ms. Rose Gottemoeller, spoke about “Women, Peace and Security” as part of a panel discussion at the Canadian Mission to the European Union on 5 December 2017. “This is not only the right thing to do but also the smart thing to do – the effective thing to do.”, Ms. Gottemoeller pointed out on should women be more involved with conflict prevention and peacebuilding.´

GAP mid-term review: a positive assessment achieved

Gap mid-term review conducted by the European Commission was held in Dublin on October 26th. During the review each work package presented a poster to support the work accomplished, and to show how each part of the project connected to the other work packages.

“The reviewers gave a ‘Positive’ assessment of the work done so far. During the discussion, they proffered constructive advice which we have since acted upon”, commented the Principal Investigator and the Coordinator of GAP Professor Anne Holohan.

European Union Advisory Mission Iraq starts work in Baghdad

“The inauguration ceremony of the civilian European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) Iraq took place in Baghdad in the evening of Wednesday, 22 November and was attended by high-level Iraqi representatives from the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the National Security Adviser. The EU was represented through the Head of the EU Delegation to Iraq Ramon Blecua and diplomats from the EU member States. Distinguished representatives of the UN Assistance Mission Iraq, UNDP as well as of the US diplomatic corps also participated.”

GAP-project present at IECEU and WOSCAP conference in Brussels on 8th November

GAP-project was present at the final conference of the Improving the Effectiveness of Capabilities in EU Conflict Prevention (IECEU) project in Brussels in 8th November. The conference was jointly organized with the Whole of Society Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding (WOSCAP) project with a theme of “Improving Effectiveness & Enhancing EU Capabilities on Conflict Prevention & Peacebuilding”.

As a part of the conference Dr. Roísín Smith, from  National University of Ireland Maynooth pitched GAP for  over 150  experts, relevant stakeholders and end-users in the field of European Union’s conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
